Creative Connections: Uplifting the Arts Across Generations

Intergenerational Arts Engagement / Visual Arts / Cultural Enrichment
In alignment with the biennial theme, Legacy in Motion: Uplifting the Arts Across Generations, the Middletown (DE) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. implemented Creative Connections, an intergenerational arts initiative designed to bring joy, creativity, and meaningful social connection to senior residents throughout our service area.
Recognizing the need for increased social engagement, creative stimulation, and community connection among older adults, our chapter partnered with two senior living communities within our service area to deliver hands-on arts experiences that celebrated creativity, self-expression, and cultural connection.
Connection to the Theme: Legacy in Motion
Creative Connections embodies Legacy in Motion: Uplifting the Arts Across Generations by creating intentional spaces where chapter members and senior residents connect through artistic expression, storytelling, and shared experiences.

This initiative honors the wisdom and lived experiences of older generations while ensuring that art remains a living bridge across generations. Through creative engagement, participants were not only consumers of art—they became creators, collaborators, and contributors to their communities.

Program Description
During the program year, our chapter successfully partnered with two senior living communities in our service area and facilitated:
4 In-Person Creative Engagement Sessions
Held every other month, Nov-May, each session lasted approximately one hour.
1 Community Outreach Initiative in collaboration with Delta Gems

A Valentine’s Day card delivery, reaching more than 50 senior residents.
Arts-Based Activities
Floral Centerpiece Design (Visual Arts) @ Serenity and Broadmeadow
Participants designed floral centerpieces using color, texture, and personal creativity. This activity encouraged artistic expression while fostering conversation and social interaction.

Residents expressed pride in their finished creations and eagerly shared their designs with peers and staff.
Fruit Parfait Creation (Culinary Arts / Cultural Engagement) @ Serenity
Seniors assembled colorful fruit parfaits, combining creativity with wellness and sensory engagement.

The activity promoted participation, laughter, and healthy social interaction.
River Rock Painting (Community Art / Visual Arts) @ Broadmeadow
Participants painted inspirational river rocks that were later placed in a community garden, creating a lasting artistic contribution.

Residents found purpose and joy in creating art that would continue to inspire others.
Valentine’s Day Card Outreach (Creative Expression/Community Connection) - @ Broadmeadow
Committee members delivered Valentine’s cards, handmade by Delta Gems, to over 50 residents, extending artistic expression and emotional support to those unable to attend scheduled sessions.

The impact of Creative Connections was evident through resident participation, enthusiasm, and emotional response. Seniors remained actively engaged throughout each session, demonstrated joy and creativity, and repeatedly asked when our chapter would return.

Staff from partner communities shared positive feedback regarding the residents’ excitement before, during, and after each visit.
​
A special highlight of the Creative Connections initiative was the involvement of our Delta GEMS, who enthusiastically participated in an intergenerational community service project by creating handmade Valentine’s Day cards for the senior residents. With genuine excitement and intentionality, the young ladies designed heartfelt messages and artistic cards that were delivered to more than 50 residents across our partner senior community. This experience also provided our Delta GEMS with a meaningful opportunity to practice servant leadership, creative expression, and community engagement—further strengthening the intergenerational impact of Legacy in Motion: Uplifting the Arts Across Generations.

Our chapter’s Arts & Letters programming intentionally embraced Legacy in Motion: Uplifting the Arts Across Generations by creating an intergenerational, culturally grounded experience centered on culinary and visual artistry. The Gingerbread House Decorating Experience served as a platform to celebrate creativity, storytelling, and fellowship while honoring traditions that connect generations through shared artistic expression.
Participants engaged in hands-on artistic creation, demonstrating how art—particularly culinary and decorative arts—can foster meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and cultural continuity. The event created a welcoming space where seasoned members and newer Sorors connected, shared ideas, and contributed to a collective artistic experience.

Participants created original gingerbread house designs, blending culinary art with visual storytelling. A friendly competition, judged by an impartial evaluator, encouraged creativity and innovation while maintaining a spirit of fellowship.

Frames of Truth: Documentary Screening & Community Conversation

In alignment with the biennial theme, Legacy in Motion: Uplifting the Arts Across Generations, the Middletown (DE) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presented Frames of Truth: Documentary Screening & Community Conversation, an arts-based educational experience designed to use cinema as a catalyst for cultural reflection, historical awareness, and intergenerational dialogue.
This event was created to expose sorority members to powerful stories rooted in local African American history, culture, resilience, and social impact while creating a safe space for thoughtful discussion across generations.
Connection to Theme: Legacy in Motion
Frames of Truth directly supports Legacy in Motion: Uplifting the Arts Across Generations by using documentary film to preserve history, amplify African American voices, and connect lived experiences across age groups. Through cinema and facilitated dialogue, participants were invited to reflect on the contributions, struggles, and triumphs of past and present generations while considering their own role in shaping the future.
The event transformed film watching from passive entertainment into an active learning experience that promoted cultural understanding, empathy, and community connection.

Regional Arts & Letters Support
Our documentary event directly supported the regional theme, Legacy in Motion, by curating culturally relevant cinema experiences that encouraged intergenerational dialogue, historical reflection, and artistic appreciation.

In a collegiate collaboration, we hosted a documentary screening event featuring award-winning films centered on African American experiences, social justice, identity, and cultural legacy which were produced by a local soror.

Joe Turner’s Come and Gone Crimson Stage - Meet up
Program Category: Performing Arts / Theatre / Cultural & Intergenerational Engagement
In alignment with the biennial theme, Legacy in Motion: Uplifting the Arts Across Generations, the Middletown (DE) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. organized a chapter theatre experience to attend the stage production of Joe Turner's Come and Gone in New York City.

This shared performing arts experience provided members with the opportunity to engage deeply with African American storytelling, history, and theatrical excellence through the work of renowned playwright August Wilson. The event served as both a cultural enrichment activity and an intentional effort to support African American theatre and artistic preservation.
Connection to Theme: Legacy in Motion
Joe Turner’s Come and Gone powerfully embodies the spirit of Legacy in Motion through its exploration of identity, migration, resilience, heritage, and the search for belonging within the African American experience.
By attending this production together, chapter members engaged in a meaningful intergenerational and cultural arts experience that connected historical narratives to contemporary conversations about identity, freedom, family, and community.
The production demonstrated how theatre preserves cultural memory and ensures that the stories, struggles, and triumphs of earlier generations continue to educate and inspire future generations.

As part of our chapter’s commitment to supporting the National Arts & Letters Commission initiatives, members and guests gathered to attend a group viewing of Michael.
